14th Battalion Diary – 27 April 1915

1 officer (Capt. N.C. Baldock) returned to Base sick.  Practically no shrapnel fire on beach.

8.10am

O.C. 14th Bn received orders to move along beach and up valley running N.E. in Sgs 224 L & H under Brigadier 4th Inf. Bde.  Battalion moved up valley under heavy shrapnel fire.

10.45am

One Coy detached and sent to support 15th Battalion.

1.20pm

Two Coys (A & B) under Major Adams sent to occupy and entrench position about I. 3 sq 224 later known as Quinn’s Post.  Major Adams wounded and Major Rankine took over command.

1.45pm

One Company (C) under Major Steele sent to occupy right of No. 3 section defence held by 4th Inf Bde.  This position is later known as Courtney’s Post.

2.10pm

Machine gun section sent to take up a position on Major Steele’s left.  Heavy infantry fire was kept up all day along the ridge held by 4th Inf. Bde.  Also continual shrapnel fire down the valley.  In the evening several attempts were made by the enemy to break through our line without success, and all attempts were successfully repulsed, sometimes with the bayonet.

Communications seriously hampered owing to the lack of field telephones, and messengers sent were shot at by snipers – making communication uncertain and difficult.
