13th Battalion Diary – 7 August 1915
At 3:20am – 13th Btn (less A, B and C
Coys) + 14th Btn took up a line in continuation of Wilts Rifles who were
already in position.
Although there was only half an hour of
darkness and the men dug feverishly it was fully two hours before we
were fired on by the enemy. As dawn broke, the 15th and 16th Btns,
beating up the Aghyl Dere drove a force of some 80 or 100 Turks onto our
position. 13th Btn took 20 prisoners including two officers. Total
casualties during night march – 11 other ranks killed – 2 officers and
57 other ranks wounded.
B, C + D Coys followed column and
rejoined Battalion during morning.
