13th Battalion History – 12 May 1915
From the 8th to the 13th we were again
in the front line on Pope’s and Quinn’s, and this period was a specially
trying one, for not only did the enemy burst shrapnel right into our
trenches, but it rained heavily, which rain was most tormenting to the
troops on Pope’s, preventing any cooking, and, during the first month on
Gallipoli, each did his own cooking, most various being the dishes and
the utensils devised, ground biscuit fried in bacon fat being the
commonest, the grater being a jam-tin holed with a bayonet. And there
was no sleep for the Battalion was continually standing-to.
